Singapore – a melting potpourri and fusion of Sorts !!
Singapore – a melting potpourri and fusion of Sorts !!
The magic of Singapore starts with a picturesque landing at
the world famous no 1 airport , Changi. Its amazing to see how Singapore boasts
of some of the world’s largest , despite being one of the smallest countries in
the world. Located at the southernmost tip of the peninsula that has many other
famous tourist destinations in Asia such as Malaysia, Thailand and further up
Burma, Singapore is known for having the largest duty free Sea port , largest
Airport , and the best of zoos , parks , theme parks , etc. and of course, its
fair share of shopping arcades
What we did:
We stayed at Singapore for only two days of which we spent
one entire day at the Sentosa island Universal Studios theme park. It takes
up to an entire day to see and complete everything in the Universal studios
theme park. Located across the strait of
Singapore, Sentosa is a small island south of Singapore. It packs a punch
however, with Universal studios , and other theme parks, restaurants etc.
dotting the island. Toward the evening , if time permits , hop on board the
cable stayed car for a ride back across the creek to Singapore or visit the
Madame Tussaud museum located on the island before you head back.
Singapore is a foodies delight. With a multicultural
influence of people from various parts of Asia, its become a fusion of
cuisines. We visited Roberts Quay and Clark's Quay known for its street food
stalls, Little India known for Indian street food stalls, and a pan Asian food
court ( I cannot recollect the name though). We also did the Marina Bay , and
at the time there was Chinese New year which is a great time to Visit (Feb/Mar)
during this time, Singaporean citizens especially of Chinese ancestry celebrate
the festival with great pomp. There are street carnivals , floats , dances and
its an amazing experience. We did the Singapore flyer which is a MUST DO for
the thrill seeker. For shopping, you can visit the quays which have nice
affordable stalls , or there are ample malls across the city with cafes and eating
outlets
Travel Tips:
Take a metro card and ride around town conveniently.
Singapore is a small country , but very organised in terms of having clean
footpaths, promenades and side walks. So its always a pleasure to get off at
the station and walk onward to your destination from there. Cabs and other road
travel can be kind of expensive.
For less expensive shopping there are certain malls in the
Little India area, china town area which are more affordable especially if
shopping for trinkets, souvenirs and small items like handicrafts etc. Of
course, don’t expect to find branded stuff here. Also, lots of small street
food outlets in these parts of town with very cheap and very good food options
To explore all of what Singapore has to offer, spend at
least 4-5 days to be able to get enough time to see and do stuff. 2 days was
more rushed in our experience and there were a lot of stuff that we didn’t get
to do For E.g. the Singapore Zoo, Bird Park, Botanical Gardens, and some other
Theme parks that we didn’t get a chance to check out.
Stay:
We stayed at the RELC international hotel in Singapore. Very conveniently located in the Orchards part of town and close to the main city center and in a green locality and neighborhood. However, the rooms were average and the breakfast and food was disappointing.
